Welcome to the Anglo-Turkish society web site.
The Anglo-Turkish Society was founded in 1953 with the object of strengthening and developing the historical ties of friendship and understanding between the peoples of Britain and Turkey. Four of the original seven members of the Society’s management Council are current members.
We encourage and give support to Turkish musicians, artists and photographers, as well as supporting charities with Anglo-Turkish connections, such as
Yedi Pınar, the facility for disadvantaged children at Adana, a sister organisation of
Seven Springs in Gloucestershire. We had a major fund-raising campaign following the 1999 Turkish earthquakes, assisting more than twenty children who had lost parents and/or homes to complete secondary education. Famous English and Turkish cooks and culinary writers have contributed to the publication “
Turkish Cookery”, editor Sally Mustoe, which is on sale in Holland, Turkey, UK and USA and continues to support this cause.
Our recently late President of the Society was Professor Geoffrey Lewis, Emeritus Professor of Turkish at Oxford University, author of Teach Yourself Turkish, as well as of numerous works on Turkey and the Turkish language.
Our bi-annual newsletter keeps members informed of matters of general Anglo-Turkish interest. Our Events programme comes out usually three times a year.
The Society, which at present has some 400 members, provides an opportunity for all those interested in Turkey, visitors from Turkey, Turkish residents in the UK and British people who have visited or lived in Turkey to meet for cultural and social activities. Activities include lectures on a variety of subjects.
The members of all ages enjoy meeting at the functions and we should be very pleased to welcome you among us. You will receive a warm, friendly welcome.
